What do you consider to be your business’ most important asset?

(If you don’t think it’s your health, think again)

Whatever the size of your business, you are its CEO.  And as the CEO, most likely you have plans to manage risk when it comes to your business’ assets.

But, what about you?

As the business owner, you are the asset that must be cared for before any other in your business.

That’s why I call you Asset Zero.

YOU are where everything starts.

I know how it goes: you rarely think about yourself and instead you pour everything you have into your business. You never clock out. You push, and push, and then push some more. On any given day, you are juggling commuting, deadlines, customers… you name it.  There’s never enough time. There’s always something to do and everything needs to be done … yesterday.

So, when it comes to thinking about you and your health, it’s easy to start to let things go.

  • Who has time to get sick?
  • I can never leave work, how can I go see a doctor?
  • If I just to get to the other side of this project, I will start dealing with my health…
I get it. For fifteen years, I lead a global organization within a large company.

There was constant pressure to deliver results, develop high performing teams, and manage suppliers.  When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, I left my job to care for him and run his business until he got better.

Once my husband got better, he returned to the business and we continued to work together.  We launched a second company. I was in charge of writing the business plan and lining up potential investors.  I just kept pushing myself - at work, at home, in my community. I became more and more exhausted.  And I ignored the toll it was taking on my body.

And on the day of the meetings with the investors?  I was too sick to get out of bed to meet with them.

I had no other choice but to step away from our business as I had become a liability.

Are you at risk of becoming a liability to your business?

Let me guess:

  • You skip lunch and end up eating take out sometime later.
  • You survive on 4-5 hours of sleep a night.
  • You stopped the hiking, biking and weekend ski or fishing trips. Even getting in a round of golf seems like hard work.
  • You ignore warning signs that you need to take better care of yourself, and work through bronchitis, injuries and grief.
Here’s what I see with most people I work with:
  • You’re worn out.
  • You’re exhausted.
  • You’re running on empty.

If you can’t show up to work every day feeling well, how are you going to show up when the stakes are high?

Does any of this sound familiar?

You put so much into your business, at times sacrificing your health and personal life.

Here’s what happens when Asset Zero is out of balance:

  • It gets more difficult to maintain or grow your business
  • Relationships suffer – be it with your spouse, children, friends
  • You lack the energy to get outdoors and do the things you love

Without a plan, Asset Zero—you, just like me —can start to become a liability to your business.

You’ve come this far, here’s some more about my background:

  • As a biology minor in college, I often the questioned the professors as to why there wasn’t a course that brought all the systems we studied separately together. The most cordial response?  “That’s an interesting perspective, Ms. Jacobsen”… uuuuhhhh...
  • Fast forward, when I decided to go back to school to learn about applied functional medicine, I sought out the best instructors and practitioners in the industry:
    • I studied anatomy, physiology and functional nutrition with award-winning educator and practitioner, Andrea Nakayama. It was through Andrea that I learned that truly helping people is both a science and an art.
    • Rigorous training of functional lab work was at Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® and with Michael McEvoy, who is very well-known in the Functional Medicine world as a cutting-edge researcher and educator, at the Metabolic Healing Institute.
    • I continue to hone my clinical skills with the super-talented Tracy Harrison at the School of Applied Functional Medicine.
  • The National Board of Medical Examiners recognized me as one of the first ever national board-certified coaches.
  • Fun fact: When I lived in San Francisco in the early 90’s, I traversed the hills of the City, Marin and anywhere else on my Gary Fisher Hoo-Koo-e-Koo.  I still proudly ride this bike today – and have yet to crash (…..knock on wood….)
